Your privacy matters to us. This Privacy Policy explains how State News AI ("the Platform", "we", "us" or "our") collects, uses, stores and shares personal data when you use www.statenews.ai and our mobile applications.

This policy is written to comply with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and with the platform terms of the third-party services we integrate with.

Who is responsible for your data. Seagull Venture Private Limited is the Data Fiduciary for personal data collected through State News AI. Our contact details are at the end of this policy.

1. Data We Collect

Information you give us

Account information. When you register as a reader, we collect your name and email address. Where you sign in using a third-party account such as Google, we receive your name, email address and profile image from that provider.

Reporter information. Reporters and contributors provide their name, address, phone number, email address, district of operation and identity documents for verification, along with the media and copy they file.

Advertiser information. Advertisers provide business name, contact details, billing information and the creative material to be published.

Comments and submissions. Comments you post, and any material you submit to us as a reader, including tip-offs and photographs.

Correspondence. The content of emails, complaints and support messages you send us.

Information collected automatically

Usage data. Pages viewed, time and duration of visits, articles read and features used.

Device and network data. IP address, browser type, operating system, device identifiers and approximate location derived from IP address.

Cookies and similar technologies. Used to keep you signed in, remember preferences, measure readership and serve advertising. You can control cookies through your browser settings, though some features may not work if cookies are disabled.

2. How We Use Your Data

We process personal data for the following purposes:

To operate the Platform, create and manage accounts, and publish and attribute content
To verify the identity of reporters and contributors before granting publishing access
To handle complaints, corrections and grievances, and to maintain the records our compliance obligations require
To measure readership, understand which coverage reaches readers, and improve the Platform
To sell, serve and report on advertising, including geographic targeting at district or city level
To send service messages, security notices and, where you have consented, editorial newsletters and promotional messages
To comply with legal obligations, enforce our Terms and Conditions, and prevent fraud or misuse

You may withdraw consent for newsletters and promotional messages at any time. Withdrawal does not affect processing carried out before withdrawal.

3. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell or rent your personal data.

Service providers. We share data with providers who help us operate, including hosting and storage providers, payment processors, analytics providers and technical support. They are bound by confidentiality obligations and may process data only on our instructions.

Publishing platform. The Platform runs on the MOJO Network infrastructure operated by Seagull Venture Private Limited. Data processed on that infrastructure remains subject to this policy.

Advertising partners. Where advertising is served through a third-party network, that network may collect data through cookies subject to its own policy. We do not share your name, email address or phone number with advertisers.

Social platforms. Where we publish or cross-post content to platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube and WhatsApp, we exchange only the data needed to publish and manage those posts. Content shared onward by readers on those platforms is governed by the policies of those platforms. We do not collect personal data from your social media profile beyond what a specific feature you have requested requires.

Legal disclosure. We may disclose data where required by law or in response to a valid request from a court, government body or law enforcement authority.

4. Publication of Personal Data in News Content

Journalism necessarily involves publishing information about people. Where personal information appears in a news report, it is published in the exercise of journalistic function and in the public interest, and is governed by our Editorial Policy rather than by the account-holder provisions of this policy.

We do not publish the identity of a minor, or of a survivor of a sexual offence, in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and the POCSO Act, 2012. If you believe a published article discloses your personal information wrongly or unlawfully, contact the Grievance Officer.

5. Your Rights

As a Data Principal under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you have the right to:

Access: obtain a summary of the personal data we hold about you and how it is processed
Correction: have inaccurate or incomplete data corrected or completed
Erasure: ask us to delete personal data that is no longer needed for the purpose it was collected for, subject to any legal retention obligation
Nominate: nominate another person to exercise your rights in the event of death or incapacity
Grievance redressal: raise a complaint about our handling of your data with our Grievance Officer

6. Data Retention

We keep personal data only as long as needed for the purpose it was collected for, or as required by law. Account data is kept while the account is active. Reporter verification records are kept for the duration of the association and for a reasonable period afterwards. Complaint and grievance records are retained as required for compliance. Published editorial content forms part of the public record and is not deleted on request except under the corrections and takedown provisions of our Editorial Policy.

7. Data Security

We apply reasonable technical, administrative and physical safeguards to protect personal data against unauthorised access, loss, misuse or alteration. No transmission over the internet is entirely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Where a personal data breach occurs, we will notify affected persons and the Data Protection Board as required by law.

8. Children

Accounts on the Platform are intended for persons aged 18 and above. We do not knowingly collect personal data from a child. If we become aware that we have done so without verifiable parental consent, we will delete it.

9. Changes to this Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be notified by posting the revised policy on this page with an updated date and, where appropriate, by email.
